4-H Dog Obedience Course for Young People

This 4 H club is open to youths age 9- 18 who are interested in training a dog and learning about various aspects of dog behavior, care, health, breeds, careers with dogs, dog sports and activities and other dog-related topics .

You may work with your dog, one belonging to a friend or family member, or we can provide you with one of our foster or rescue dogs. You don't have to own a dog to participate.

This is an excellent experience for anyone planning to go into a dog-related career, dog sports or competitions. It's great for anyone who just loves dogs and wants to learn more about them. We plan on having a lot of fun as we learn!

All dogs must be spayed or neutered.
Why? Because an un-spayed/un-neutered dog is 4X more likely to bite.

About the program: The first goal is to train the dog in the basic obedience skills and good manners needed to earn the AKC Canine Good Citizen Certificate. We continue with more advanced levels of obedience that are needed to participate in various dog sports and activities. Throughout the sessions information about dog origins, anatomy, senses, psychology, breeds, health, grooming etc. will be incorporated.

More Cool Stuff: Based on the interests of the club there will also be sessions in areas such as agility, therapy work, showing dogs for conformation and/or obedience, Rally O, etc. Some sessions will include field trips, service work, and special projects. There are also opportunities to compete at the State & County Fairs. There are several categories and levels of competition such as obedience, agility, showmanship, costume contest and dog bowl quiz competition.  10 Things You Will Need to Bring
  1. Flat buckle collar (no choke or prong collars)
  1. Leash, 4 to 6 ft. Leather is best on the hands. Chain leashes are very likely to hurt your hands and even nylon webbing can cut or burn. No flexi-leads please.
  1. We may recommend a head harness or body harness for better control after we have seen your dog. If you already use these go ahead and bring them.
  1. Training treats. Your dog will work best in the distracting class environment if you use especially good treats that your dog gets excited about. Commonly used treats include hot dogs, dried liver, cheese, leftover meat. They should be cut into small pieces (for example 1/4”)
  1. A fanny pack or bag that hangs off of a belt. You need to have your treats  available very quickly.
  1. A jar of peanut butter or can of cheese whiz and a long handled mixing spoon.
  1. If your dog is not motivated by food but gets very excited about toys such as a ball or squeaky, then bring his favorite toy
  1.  Spray bottle with pure, undiluted white vinegar. This will be used judiciously to discourage unwanted behavior.
  1. Rawhide chew, pigs ear or something similar that can keep your dog occupied when he is not being worked.
  1.  Notebook and pen.

Dogs showing aggression towards people or other dogs will not be permitted.
