HARLEY THE GREAT DANE
|
<Did you weigh him at first? I'm just wondering what the weight difference is between then and now.>
No...when we first got him, we really didn't think he would live. He was already showing meat on his ribs when we took him to the vet right around Christmas...he was 130 pounds then. Found out about Liz thru my vet where Lee Anne works a couple days a week, so took Harley back to the vet in early January so we could get the shots for the class...142 pounds. He had picked up that weight really fast. I guess his initial weight as just under or just over 100 lbs. But now, he is tapering off the gain...he was 143 last week (if all of his paws were on the scale...it is difficult to keep him on the scale and see all around at once! <grin>). My husband does not care diddly about discipline for a dog (his dog, Byche, is the orneriest one we have), but he gets challenged by the skinny. So...he has stepped up Harley's food intake by making it as attractive as possible! As we speak, there is a deer roast in the camper trailer oven, and he will make gravy out of the drippings and lard, then layer it all in the bowl. That will be Harley's second full bowl of the day. (Gosh it smelled good...and I'm on this horrific diet!)
One of my problems with Harley has been knowledge. I have been emailing Beth Richardson with the Great Dane Club of Kentucky (she is so nice), and she invited me to a meeting last nite. I showed the people there Harley's picture, and they think he needs a few more pounds. So...we are working on it hard!
And thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I should have known I would get that response...I felt it in class, too!
Caroline (and Harley)
|
Hi, my name is Caroline, and my dog I trained with Liz, is Harley, the Great Dane. We live in North Henry County on a farm, with lots of animals (7 other dogs). Harley is white, blue eyed, and deaf, but has been an enjoyable and interesting fella to work with.
His picture is from when we found him eating dirt where a dead deer had lain and rotted into the ground. He had abrasions around his upper neck, appearing like he had struggled to get off a chain, and marks on his hips and legs where it looks like the chain had rubbed him raw. His eyes were infected (they droop, so the vet said this will be a constant malady), had a serious ear infection (ugh, the smell!), and has had some bad gut problems he has been medicated for. He had been seen where we picked him up for at least 2 days, and we think he was taken off that chain and taken out and dumped. He voluntarily crawled inside the truck with my son and me, and his breath was SO BAD from the rotten stuff that we had to come home with the windows not only down, but our heads stuck out! Good thing we were not far from home! I will never forget my husband's face when he saw how much truck this dog occupied! I don't know why, but Harley is extremely friendly toward people, and he and I have bonded tighter than even my beloved Lab!
